SECOP Refrigerator Compressor for the Ship's Kitchen

No.NL10MF
The SECOP NL10MF model is a N-series fully enclosed reciprocating AC compressor from Secop (formerly Danfoss Compressors). Due to its wide voltage range, high starting torque, and suitability for R134a medium-temperature applications, it is often selected as the refrigeration unit for ship catering refrigerators, beverage cabinets, medical 2–8℃ refrigerators, glass-door display cabinets, and ice cream cabinets.

Description

Basic Information

Type: Fully hermetic reciprocating piston type
Brand: Secop (formerly Danfoss)
Series: NL Series (NL6.1 / NL7.3 / NL8.4 / NL10 / NL12.6...)
Weight: Approximately 10.5 kg
Height: 203 mm, Shell length: 205 mm, including wiring box: 254 mm, Width: 166 mm

Principle

Single-phase 220 V motor drives the crank connecting rod → the piston moves up and down in the cylinder → through the intake/exhaust valve plates, the low-temperature and low-pressure R134a vapor from the evaporator is "compressed" into a high-temperature and high-pressure gas → sent to the condenser for heat release → completing the "heart" action of the refrigeration cycle.

Electrical

Power Supply: 220–240 V / 50 Hz or 208–230 V / 60 Hz Single Phase
Voltage Range: 187 – 254 V
Motor type: RSIR(PTC activated )/ CSIR (Starting relay + 125 µF starting capacitor)
RLA rated operating current: approximately 2.8 A at 50 Hz, and approximately 2.4 A at 60 Hz
LRA braking current: 13 - 16.6 A
Built-in thermal protection (maximum winding temperature 125 ℃, maximum discharge temperature 130 ℃)

Refrigeration Capacity (R134a, Fan 1.5 m/s)

-20 ℃: Approximately 266 W
-10 ℃: Approximately 441 W
-5 ℃: Approximately 554 W
0 ℃: Approximately 687 W
+5 ℃: Approximately 843 W
+15 ℃: Approximately 1231 W

Refrigeration System

Refrigerant: R134a
Refrigeration oil: POE polyester oil, viscosity 32 cSt
Oil filling volume: approximately 298-300 cm³
Maximum capacity: 600 g
Displacement: 10.09 / 10.10 cubic centimeters
Inhalation interface: ≈ Ø9.7 mm inner hole
Exhaust interface: ≈ Ø6.5 mm inner hole
Maximum condensing temperature: Continuous 60 ℃, short-term 70 ℃
Supports hot gas defrost, no problem for long pull-down

Maintenance

Change oil/freon: R134a + POE. Absolutely do not mix with mineral oil.
For the new machine: Perform vacuuming to the appropriate vacuum level, check for leaks, and fill according to the nameplate. Do not "add it by feel".
Frost forms on the return gas pipe to the compressor housing: The expansion valve is opened too wide/too much charging/the evaporator fan stops → liquid hammer risk.
High-pressure jump: Salt slurry in the condenser, fan shutdown, high seawater/ambient temperature.
Starting capacitor bulge: Common in CSIR version, check once every 2 to 4 years in the humid and hot environment of the ship.
Built-in protection repeatedly trips: Do not short-circuit. Check ventilation, voltage, condensation, refrigerant, capacitors.

Q & A

Q1:  What exactly is the NL10MF compressor?
A1:  Fully enclosed reciprocating (piston) single-phase AC compressor, R134a, medium-temperature application (MBP).

Q2:  What are the differences between the start-up methods RSIR and CSIR?
A2:  RSIR: PTC starting relay, low starting torque (LST), suitable for capillary systems and scenarios where the shutdown pressure energy is balanced.
Electromagnetic starting relay + 125 µF / 220 V starting capacitor, high starting torque (HST).

Q3:  What's the internal principle of NL10MF in one sentence?
A3:  The suction oil from the shell first flows through the motor to cool the windings. The POE oil is flung to the friction surface by the crankshaft, and the valve plate controls the unidirectional flow.

Q4:  Can NL10MF be used as a -25 ℃ cryogenic machine?
A4:  Not recommended. - At -20 ℃, the cooling capacity has dropped to over 200 watts during evaporation; for the deep freezer, an LBP machine or an R404A/R290 model should be used.

Q5:  What should be noted when changing to NL10MF?
A5:  Power supply 208-230 V  60 Hz
Is the starting form RSIR or CSIR (with different models of starting relay and capacitor)
       Refrigerant R134a + POE oil
       Suction/discharge/process pipe diameter: Suction ≈ Ø 9.7mm, discharge/process ≈ Ø 6.5mm (inner diameter of copper pipe).
Before filling, evacuate the air, check for leaks, and determine the filling amount according to the system length (not directly fill up to 600g).

Q6:  Is it normal for frost to form on the suction pipe to the shell?
A6:  Abnormal. For the NL10MF fully enclosed machine, liquid strike occurs when liquid R134a enters the cylinder → the valve plate, connecting rod, and gasket are damaged.
Treatment: Reduce the expansion valve opening, check the charging quantity, inspect the evaporator fan, and before shutting down, allow the compressor to run for a few more minutes to draw the  refrigerant back.
